Start Fit...Stay Fit - Weight Loss Program for Children
The Start Fit...Stay Fit Weight Loss Program For Children has been developed to help obese and near obese children adopt a healthy lifestyle that promotes weight reduction and better health. Through a fun, non- judgmental approach, obese children will learn that they can enjoy exercise and healthier foods. The program is based on two, one-hour exercise sessions per week, nutritional counseling plus parental involvement and support.

A key component in the success of this program will be the involvement of local health care professionals in the form of an advisory board. The advisory board will be made up of the following professionals: family physicians, pediatric physicians and certified nutritionists. Our goal is to offer parents an approved, sound approach to weight loss for their child that they can feel good about.

The program’s design is as follows:

Classes
Monday 5:30 to 6:30 pm - Friday 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

Each session will consist of:
  • A fifteen minute motivational/experience, sharing period.
  • A fifteen minute warm-up comprised of low impact aerobics and flexibility training.
  • Two (2) fifteen minute sessions that are supervised and run by the professionals of Kid Power Gym. The sessions will incorporate:
    • Rock climbing
    • Cargo net climbing
    • Trampolines
    • Tightrope walking
    • Rope climbing (when more advanced and physically capable)
    • Tumble track
The in-house sessions will be supplemented with materials parents will take home with them to encourage continued activities outside of Kid Power Gym. Students with an Xbox Gaming System will be encouraged to purchase or borrow the game: Dance, Dance Revolution. This game is a fun, age appropriate way for the child to continue to exercise at home. Families without an Xbox System or without a video game will be given other options that require active participation.

Once a month, parents will be included in the program to share in the experience and learn new ideas to assist their child’s progress at home.

Upon enrollment, student will be weighed, measured in inches (to determine target areas for reduction) and will have their Body Mass Index determined. To encourage participation, children will be given a notebook in order to record their progress. As the child meets their goals during the program, they can earn points that will be redeemed at the end of the each month. The child with the most points will be named student of the month, featured in our newsletter and given a prize. Points will be awarded for the following:
  • Best kept notebook information.
  • Most improvement in various areas and apparatus.
  • Loss of pounds.
  • Loss of inches.
  • Creating nutritional dishes and snacks.
Notebooks will be used to record what the child eats on a daily basis, and what physical activity was done during a given week.

To complete the program, a nutritionist will supply healthy, fun menus for use during each week.

We appreciate your consideration and hope you will be encouraged to become a member of our advisory board as we work to make a positive impact on the issue of childhood obesity in our region.
